![]() ![]() Behind the passenger compartment is a raucous V-10 engine that makes as much as 602 horsepower depending on which version you choose and literally howls when prodded. What will it be - the high-value Audi or the high-profile Lambo? We wouldn't pay much attention to the Joneses at the $200k price level and go with the R8 quattro that has serious supercar features that the Lambo lacks - and everyday usability.Although it shares its powertrain and mechanicals with the Lamborghini Huracán, the 2020 Audi R8 is less sharp-edged and surprisingly easy to live with day to day. What matters more is that you can get a Lamborghini for Audi money, even if it loses the spec comparison and to some, that may prove irresistible. And it actually has a center infotainment touchscreen, as if that matters much. On paper, it's poor value but in reality, it has that Lamborghini badge on the hood and the more hardcore, visceral driving experience that goes with it. And what better comparison than the car it shares most of its genes with? The base Huracán Evo Spyder RWD starts off at around $16k more than the R8 quattro flagship and does without features such as the Audi's carbon-ceramic brakes and all-wheel drive. While many would consider the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet at this price level - and the turbocharged Porker certainly outperforms the R8 in a straight line - you'll likely be more interested in other high-revving naturally aspirated competition if you're in the market for an R8 Spyder. No efficiency and performance can beat the sound of that V10 engine, however. At $169,500, the NSX Type S costs just $9k more than the base R8 Spyder, but is only available as a coupe. Where the Audi outshines the NSX is in the cabin Audi's virtual cockpit outclasses the system in the NSX, and the interior design just feels more special. The NSX feels sharper and keener on driver input on the road, despite carrying the extra weight of its hybrid batteries. Its 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, mounted behind the passengers, delivers 600 horsepower and 492 lb-ft of torque and sends its power through a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission on all four wheels, resulting in a blistering zero to sixty sprint of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 191 mph. In fact, the Acura NSX Type S is the faster car between the two. It was one of the first mainstream supercars to employ such a system and has proven to be more than capable of seeing off its foes. When the Acura NSX first came out in its current form, we were skeptical of its hybrid powertrain. The Audi rings and badges can be painted black as an option on R8 V10 quattro models. At the back, you'll find LED taillights with dynamic turn signals on both. The RWD gets full LED headlights and the quattro gets LED headlights with Audi laser light. The RWD model features chrome exhaust tips unless the Sport Exhaust package is specified, in which case the exhaust tips are black, as they are on the quattro that has the sport exhaust as standard. The RWD rolls on a set of 20-inch five-V-spoke-Evo design, bi-color anthracite wheels and the quattro gets a five-double-spoke dynamic 20-inch wheel design. The quattro model also features mirror housings, a rear spoiler, side blades, and engine-compartment trim in carbon fiber, while the RWD's side blades are gloss black. By default, these items are finished in a matte-titanium color on the quattro, with an option to select carbon fiber. The R8 RWD model features a lower front lip spoiler, exhaust surround, and rocker sill inlay that are finished in gloss black. ![]() The convertible version of the Audi R8 is an edgy beast, somewhere between '80s Japanese manga cartoon and futuristic sci-fi film.
